Indonesian woman claims to be 157 years old

Census workers in Indonesia have come across a woman who claims to be 157 years old.

Don't believe her? You could always ask her 108-year-old adopted daughter.

Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW) reports the woman, identified only as Turinah, lives in a small village on the island of Sumatra. She doesn't have identification papers because she burned them in 1965 so she wouldn't be connected to communists, she told authorities.

"There's no authentic data to prove her age but judging from her statements and the age of her adopted daughter, who's now 108 years old, it's difficult to doubt it," statistics bureau official Jhonny Sardjono told global news agency AFP Monday.

AFP reported the woman still works around her home and has smoked clove cigarettes all her life.

"Despite her age she still has an incredible memory, clear sight and has no hearing problems. She speaks Dutch quite fluently," Sardjono said.

If it's true, it means the woman has outlived the only person verified to have lived more than 120 years. Jeanne Calment of France died in 1997 at the age of 122.

RNW says Turinah claimed to be born in 1853 and is able to describe the huge eruption of the Krakatao volcano between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia in June 1883, which she said she saw with her own eyes.

In the year of her birth, street signs were authorized in San Francisco intersections for the first time, the first electric telegraph was used, the U.S. began minting $3 gold pieces and Giuseppe Verdi's Opera La Traviata premiered in Venice.

10 More Movie Killers (Part 2)

By Joan Seth

Continuing from Part 1, here are 10 more fictional movie killers. I have limited my selection to killers who are real humans here. Often, these movie characters are based upon real life serial killers.

1. Jack Torrance (The Shining)

Jack (portrayed by Jack Nicholson) was a recovering alcoholic who decides to get a job overseeing the Overlook Hotel during the winter months. He had hoped that he would be able to rebuild his life, his relationship with his family and finish a novel.

Little do they know, that the hotel is haunted by ghosts and a demonic entity, who feeds on Jack's mentality and cabin fever. He is eventually turned insane by the ghosts who tell him to kill his family.

The scenes of the insane Jack relentlessly pursuing his wife and son through the hotel have earned this film a place in various greatest horror movie lists.

Preferred weapon of choice: Mallet
Movie appearances: 1
Death toll: 1 (the hotel cook)

2. Buffalo Bill (The Silence of the Lambs)

Buffalo Bill, real name Jame Gumb (played by Ted Levine) was partially inspired by real life murderers Ed Gein and Ted Bundy, amongst others. He was a serial killer, who would pretend to be injured and approach women for assistance.

Thereafter, he would kidnap the woman and starve them so that their skin would be loose enough to be removed. He hopes to create a "woman suit" for himself; he believe he can then transform into a woman through a process similar to metamorphosis in insects.

Preferred weapon of choice: .44 Colt Magnum Revolver
Movie appearances: 1
Death toll: at least 6

3. Light Yagami (Death Note)

Light (Tatsuya Fujiwara) was a excellent and brilliant high school student, who by chance, finds a Death Note dropped by a Shinigami (Death God). He slowly discovers the power of the Death Note - a person's name written in the note will die. Instead of succumbing to fear or using the note rashly, he calmly decrees that he will use it to rid the world of criminals and imbeciles, thereby creating a new world where he will rule as a God.

Eventually, his plans are foiled by the equally brilliant detective L (in the comic series, he is defeated by L's successors, Mello and Near). He dies in the end, without showing any remorse, insisting his actions are for the good of humanity and claiming that he is the God of the new world.

Preferred weapon of choice: Death Note
Movie appearances: 2 + Upcoming US remake
Death toll: Hundreds of thousands

4. Leslie Vernon (Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon)

In this part horror part documentary film, a aspiring serial killer, Leslie Vernon (Nathan Baesel) agrees to be filmed by a group of documentary makers. He then shows off his studious methods and preparations, which involve choosing his victims, creating a legend behind the killer and setting up the house for his kills.

This is a clever movie, explaining how various horror movie clichés have evolved throughout the years - e.g. the Final Girl, the trapped house, the killer who teleports, etc. With all his ingenuity and preparations, Leslie is almost believed as a supernatural killer.

5. Ghostface (Scream)

The Ghostface killer refers to the five killers in the Scream movie series. The mask was inspired by the famous Edvard Munch painting, The Scream. Ghostface often calls his victims on the phone, taunting or threatening them before killing them with a 6 inch hunting knife. Even though he is usually known for asking his victims horror film trivia while stalking them, he only does this six times in the Scream Series.

The killers are motivated to kill for various reasons, ultimately they will be defeated. Seemingly with supernatural powers owing to horror movie conventions, in the first and second movie, it was revealed that there are actually 2 people working together as the killer.

Preferred weapon of choice: Knife
Movie appearances: 3 + 1 upcoming
Death toll: 20+

Doe also kept a man bedridden for a year (surviving on nutrient drips) to represent Sloth. Lastly, he mutilates the face of a young model and forces her to commit suicide to represent Pride.

After which, he strangely surrenders himself to the police. Feigning cooperation, Doe offers to take detectives Mills and Sommerset (Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman) to the location of the other murders. Eventually, he forces Mills to shoot him, presenting the sin of Envy, while Mills is now condemned as a killer, representing the sin of Wrath.

He eventually kills a woman who moves into the motel and a private investigator who arrives to search for her, all the while impersonating his mother and interacting with the corpse as if it were still alive. In further film sequels, he struggles to maintain his sanity and his mother personality taking over. He is frequently released and returned to a mental institution, while strange murders continue to revolve around him.

The character was also based on real life serial killer Ed Gein.

Miraculously, he survived, and decided to educate other people to better appreciate their lives and what its worth for and whether they have the will to live.

He would kidnap his victims, who were always guilty of destroying their lives and put them through a series of tests. Frequently, these involved traps which are symbolic of a perceived flaw in each person's life.

If the victim decides to survive and fight for his or her life, he or she would experience severe agony or the loss of body parts, but would be granted a new life, i.e. a rebirth. Those who failed their ordeal will certainly perish.

Preferred weapon of choice: Various traps
Movie appearances: 6 + 1 upcoming
Death toll: None, as he does not directly kill his victims. However, he has indirectly caused the deaths of at least 40 people

9. Patrick Bateman (American Psycho)

Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) had everything going for it. A expensive penthouse, a high paying job, mingling with elite society and a beautiful finance. However, he has a dark side - he is addicted to drugs, sex with prostitutes and conspicuous consumption. He also views all of his friends as the same and confuses between them.

And by the way, he is also a prolific serial killer, he kills his colleagues because 'they make him look bad'. He kills prostitutes for sadistic sexual pleasure and homeless strangers, just because 'he wants to'.

Or did he? The movie ending is ambiguous, making it seem like Bateman did not actually kill anyone, but committed the killings all in his head, which differs from the book's ending. Whichever it is, he fits the description of a ultimate serial killer, killing just because he can.

Preferred weapon of choice: Various knives and tools
Movie appearances: 1 (1 other non canonical)
Death toll: None or Hundreds(?)

Picture is (C) copyright to Lions Gate Entertainment

However, in the sequels, he is depicted as the main villain, while the prequel showcases his origins and development into a serial killer.

Highly intelligent and resourceful and physically fit, he is able to manipulate his captors and anyone who dares to get close to him. Hannibal is also able to subdue armed guards and break out of police custody. With an extensive knowledge of world cuisines and the human anatomy, he frequently makes gourmet dinners out of his victims.

His most famous quote: A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

The more we study dolphins, the brighter they turn out to be

by Anuschka de Rohan

At the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies in Mississippi, Kelly the dolphin has built up quite a reputation. All the dolphins at the institute are trained to hold onto any litter that falls into their pools until they see a trainer, when they can trade the litter for fish. In this way, the dolphins help to keep their pools clean.

Kelly has taken this task one step further. When people drop paper into the water she hides it under a rock at the bottom of the pool. The next time a trainer passes, she goes down to the rock and tears off a piece of paper to give to the trainer. After a fish reward, she goes back down, tears off another piece of paper, gets another fish, and so on. This behaviour is interesting because it shows that Kelly has a sense of the future and delays gratification. She has realised that a big piece of paper gets the same reward as a small piece and so delivers only small pieces to keep the extra food coming. She has, in effect, trained the humans.

Her cunning has not stopped there. One day, when a gull flew into her pool, she grabbed it, waited for the trainers and then gave it to them. It was a large bird and so the trainers gave her lots of fish. This seemed to give Kelly a new idea. The next time she was fed, instead of eating the last fish, she took it to the bottom of the pool and hid it under the rock where she had been hiding the paper. When no trainers were present, she brought the fish to the surface and used it to lure the gulls, which she would catch to get even more fish. After mastering this lucrative strategy, she taught her calf, who taught other calves, and so gull-baiting has become a hot game among the dolphins.

Chaplins Time Traveler

In a behind the scenes footage, part of Charlie Chaplin’s “The Circus” (1928) DVD, George Clarke found:

“A large woman dressed in black with a hat hiding most of her face, with what can only be described as a mobile phone device – talking as she walks alone. I have studied this film for over a year now – showing it to over 100 people and at a film festival, yet no-one can give any explanation as to what she is doing. My only theory – as well as many others – is simple… a time traveler on a mobile phone.”

Now here’s to our ordinary investigation, which I must say beforehand, won’t come to any definite conclusion since all we have is some seconds of a 1928 film where we can’t actually see what the woman is holding.

It could be anything, including nothing.

Time Traveler Caught In A Museum Photo

by Joan Seth

The photograph below is from the virtual Bralorne PioneerMuseum, from British Columbia, Canada. Did you notice anything out of place? Or perhaps, out of time?

The person indicated in the photo appears to be: 1) Wearing modern fashionable sunglasses, 2) Having a fashionable haircut, 3) Wearing a modern sweater and T-Shirt and 4) Holding what seems to be like a Digital Camera in his hands!

Now for comparison's sake:

These pictures depict what men in the 1940s generally wore. Comparing to our mystery man in the first picture, what can you conclude? Was he really a time traveler? Or are we missing something entirely?

The Robam Komchat Uptrop Changrey (Chasing Away Bad Spirits Dance)

This dance originates from the Cham Muslim ethnic group who live in Kompong Tralach District, Kompong Chnang Province. The dance depicts elements of the Cham’s traditional spirit possession rituals.

Under the supervision of Prof. Chheng Phon, the piece was choreographed in 1983 by 18 principal dancers of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts.

Traditional Folk Dance Refers to all kinds of dances that are passed on from one generation to another and that are often linked to an ethnic group's traditional' ceremonies. In Cambodia, traditional dances mostly involve animism and express beliefs in the super natural. When people have problems thought to have been caused by super natural or spirits, they offer lively dances to appease them.

Folk dances are performed at religious ceremonies, festivities, and for leisurely entertainment. Traditionally, all dances were performed in the village in large clearings or public areas at times of birth, marriage, death, during planting and harvesting, hunting, war, or at a feast. Some dances are related to Buddhist beliefs such as Kgnork Pailin and Trot dances. Others are performed once a year according to various spiritual and cere monial calendars.

Khmer folk dances are highly spirited dances that follow popular themes with lively movements and gestures. Dance motifs are usually based on local legends and the everyday life of the people. Dancers dance with easy, improvised yet.

Naked man 'devil' sparks mass self-defenestration in France ("Diable" homme nu étincelles de masse auto-défenestration en France)

PARIS — Eleven people were injured when they jumped out of a second-storey window near Paris early Saturday, thinking a naked man tending his crying baby in the night was the devil, the local prosecutor said.

"Thirteen people were in an apartment on the second floor when, around 3 am, one of the occupants heard his child crying," the deputy prosecutor in Versailles, Odile Faivre, told AFP.

"The man in question of African origin, who was completely naked, got up to feed his child, at which point the other occupants took him for the devil," said Faivre.

"He was seriously wounded in the hand after being stabbed with a knife before he was thrown out of the apartment, via the door."

Google Street View gawkers see 'God'

A god-like figure has been spotted on Google Street View, hovering midair above a lake in Quarten, Switzerland.

Although the image, discovered by the Gawker blog, is most likely to be the result of some sort of light distortion or lens flare, blogger Max Read has questioned whether it might have more mysterious origins.

“Is it something on the camera lens? Or is it maybe... God and His only begotten Son?

“And who's to say that God isn't 'something on the lens', in some kind of a cosmic, metaphysical sense?” he writes.

While Street View cameras have captured numerous bizarre images over the past few years, most of these have involved real people doing something out of the ordinary – like sleeping in a gutter or answering the call of nature. The most shocking of these was the recent discovery of dead bodies captured by StreetView cameras in Brazil.

Spirits blamed for girls fainting

PHNOM PENH - TEACHERS of 10 teenage girls who collapsed one after another at their rural Cambodian school blamed the mysterious ailment on angry spirits on Saturday.

The girls, aged between 14 and 18, were treated in hospital after fainting but doctors could not ascertain why the youngsters were struck down, said Ruos Lim Chhee, head of the high school in Pnov, northern Cambodia.

He told AFP that all of the girls were found to be healthy, with no signs of food poisoning, although two were a little low on glucose.

'We are afraid we are under a spell because we didn't offer any traditional dancing and music to the spirits on the opening day this year,' he said.

'But we have just offered fruits, boiled chickens and wine to the spirits today, and we hope the students will get better and the spirits will take care of us.' Mil Khim, a teacher who witnessed the string of incidents on Thursday, said one of his students started to complain of chest pains early in the morning and then suffered convulsions before falling unconscious.

'The strange phenomenon lasted only a few hours, as eight seventh graders and two from eighth and ninth grade fainted subsequently,' he said. Cambodians in rural areas often believe supernatural forces are behind unexplained events. -- AFP

Mona Lisa's remains 'lie in Florence rubbish tip'

The remains of the Italian woman who was the model for Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa were dug up 30 years ago and now lie in a municipal rubbish tip, an Italian expert has claimed.

Lisa Gherardini died in Florence in 1542 and was buried in the grounds of Sant'Orsola convent.

Over the centuries the Franciscan convent was used as a tobacco factory and a university teaching facility but in the 1980s a redevelopment was launched to convert it into a barracks for Italy's tax police, the Guardia di Finanza.

The developers had no knowledge that it was the final resting place of da Vinci's famous model – that was only discovered in 2007 – and during work to build an underground car park, the convent's foundations were excavated, along with the crumbling remains of graves and tombs.
The rubble was then dumped in a municipal landfill site on the outskirts of Florence.

The girl became the talk of her village when she allegedly vanished on several occasions, only to be found in odd places like inside a cement mixer and a cemetery.

The parents of Siti Balqis Mohd Nor, 22, were relieved with the success of the two bomoh and hoped their life would return to normal as the djinns were said to be behind the woman's mysterious disappearances.

Pareidolia in nature

By Joan Seth

Pareidolia is defined a psychological phenomenon involving a vague and random stimulus (often an image or sound) being perceived as significant. Usual examples include seeing faces, images, animals, deities in different parts of the natural world like the sky, rocks, trees or water.

One of the most famous examples is the Face On Mars. A particular position where the picture was taken, together with lighting and shadow, combined to produce a face-like image in a mesa on Mars.

It has long been the subject of various Extraterrestrial conspiracy theories, but ultimately, it has been proven to be just a trick of light. But without further ado, here are some more examples in our natural world.

A face in a banana tree

A skull face in spider web

A elephant-like animal in stone

A red heart in a capsicum

A crocodile in rock
