It's raining fish! It's normal

The story on "fish falling from the sky" in Agusan del Sur was generally met with disbelief across social networking sites. Some Facebook users, however, offered possible explanations – ranging from logical to supernatural.

Some said the fish might have fallen from a passing aircraft. Yet some believed the incident was a sign that the world is coming to an end.

But fish falling from the sky is not supernatural nor is it doomsday's beckoning. It actually has a name: Lluvia de Peces.

Residents of Loreto town in Agusan del Sur experienced this phenomenon Friday morning when dozens of 3-inch-long mudfish rained on them. PAGASA-Butuan Chief Engr. Lolit Binalay told Bombo Radyo a similar incident had happened in Lake Mainit in Agusan del Norte a few years back.

The same thing happened to a village in Powys, Wales in 2004 and to Folsom, California in 2006, among reported others.

How does it happen? Whirlwinds over water develop into waterspouts and become a swirling force that can suck in almost anything of the water's content: fish, eels, and even frogs.

According to American scientist Nilton Renno, fish can "fly" into the sky along with the waterspout. He told Scienceline.org that "even if the waterspout stops spinning, the fish in the cloud can be carried over land, buffeted up and down and around."

Loreto residents said they were surprised by the phenomenon because the sea and the river are far from their place. But according to Renno, fish can "swim" in the clouds and reach places until the wind can no longer support its flight, and that's when they come down.

The fish are sometimes taken so high into the atmosphere that they land dead.

Seventy-two of the fish that fell on Agusan del Sur survived the "journey" and have been placed by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources personnel in an aquarium for experts to study.

The Philippines may not hear of it often as it is an uncommon phenomenon. But 'fish rains' have been reported for centuries.

According to a BBC report, "fish are the most common thing to have rained down on you – other than rain itself, of course." People have heard of frogs, tomatoes, and lumps of coals falling from the sky in few bizarre instances.

Weather has been inclement in Agusan del Sur since the past week, marked with a downpour on Friday that BFAR believes may have triggered the formation of a waterspout.

Weird, Birdlike Mystery Drone Crashes in Pakistan

It looks a bit like silver bird. It probably was used to spy on insurgents. And now it’s in the hands of the Pakistanis.

Picture is (C) copyright to Wired

WIRED editor-in-chief Chris Anderson flags pictures of an unusual, unfamiliar drone that reportedly crashed crashed over southwestern Pakistan late last week. It’s a surveillance drone, with a camera attached — recovered from the crash but not apparently visible in this photo — rather than the larger, deathly flying robots that shoot missiles. This one looks tiny, with a wingspan not much longer than a man’s outstretched arms, and clearly light enough for a grown man to carry.

The Pakistani Frontier Corps in Baluchistan province recovered the drone. And they confidently declare it to be an “American surveillance unmanned aerial vehicle.” But as Anderson points out, it doesn’t look like anything the U.S. flies — or at least acknowledges flying. What’s the deal?

Danger Room asked some of our favorite drone and aviation enthusiasts for their perspective on the small mystery drone. And we weren’t the only ones who thought it looked decidedly avian.

Sea of green as algae invasion hits Chinese holiday beaches

LOOK mum… I can do the boggy-paddle. This brave youngster takes a holiday dip in the sea, surrounded by a vast expanse of slimy green algae.

But his swim turns out to be more of a swampy crawl through a forest of seaweed. And he probably didn’t need his armbands to stay afloat.

Despite being harmless, the sudden influx of algae has hit tourism around Qingdao in China’s Shandong province and damaged the local fishing industry.

Mysterious Hairy, Giant Caterpillars Invade Yogya

Villagers from the border region between Yogyakarta and East Java have reported being attacked by what can only be described as jumbo caterpillars.

Surono, a resident of Sambirejo village, Gunung Kidul district, told the Jakarta Globe on Friday that the unusually large caterpillars — covered in long hair which make them appear about the size of a child’s fist — began appearing about 10 days ago.

“Villagers were shocked and scared because these caterpillars looked really unusual,” he said. “It is a bit bigger than a regular caterpillar, but the hair is so thick it makes them look jumbo-size.” Surono said the caterpillars had initially only attacked nearby plantations, but over the past several days they had decimated other trees in the area and were also invading villagers’ homes.

Jurong Crocodile Rumor

From Contributor : Mr. Chan ShiJie (陈世杰)

crocodile 1

A crocodile lifespan generally as to speak could be between the range from 45 to 100 yrs; though 75 seems to be the average lifespan! but it also very subjected to the type of species of the crocodile as well.

Before the development of Jurong which the earliest, was somewhere in the 1960s, Jurong Back then had another known name to many which was ..... The Heaven of the crocodile or what some also called it as paradise of the crocodile. (鳄鱼天堂, Buaya Paradise, मगरमच्छ स्वर्ग )

Photobucket

In this whole piece of land known as Jurong, the population of Crocodiles far exceeds the population of humans. Crocodiles can be very easily sighted everywhere you go. There is no such place which crocodile cannot be seen or found in Jurong back then.

But with the development of Jurong, the crocodiles of Jurong had disappeared, all except for perhaps 1 !

This one according to the local rumour which has been already for many years, resides in Jurong Lake. Till today this rumour still continues to exists and remain unproved true or false.

Jurong Lake 4

Rumor of Jurong Lake

However, there is one particular rumor concerning this lake and the crocodiles I earlier mentioned. The rumor of it is that, it has been said that there is a crocodile in that lake ! This rumor has already been pass down for a few generations ! It has not been confirmed by anyone on if the rumor is true or false, up to present and hence this rumor still continues.

Jurong Lake 6

Jurong Lake 5

Jurong Lake 1

There has been accidents that has taken place before around and in this lake and whenever such accident happened, people will link it to the rumor that , there could be a possibilities that the person has encounter the crocodile.

There has been people who went fishing or swimming and encounter some accidents before. All of the accidents by them were linked with the crocodile of Jurong lake base on urban rumors.

Sightings of Crocodile

Sometimes at night, based on rumors, some of the residents who lived in the HDB(s) or other houses near that lake had make claims that from their high rise storey that they had spotted crocodile appearing in that lake. But anyways these are stories based on rumors only.

How valid and true these rumors, stories and claims are up to present still remains a mystery not being proven by anyone yet ! That lake is very scary ! What really lies beneath that lake? Are the rumors true? Much about that lake is still unknown !

Urban Jurong Lake and Crocodile

crocodile 6

So beware the next time you are near to the Jurong Lake ! It is a Dangerous Lake ! A lake that is not so simple as it seems to be !

Has it ever even stumbled across to your mind on what has happen to those crocodiles back then? Well, it is a likely thing that many escaped back to Malaysia. Some ended up in the Singapore crocodile farm and zoo of Singapore. That was what that has been said to where all those crocodiles that inhabitant Jurong back has ended up based on the believes and sayings from people of Jurong.

It can be a very likely case that this Jurong Lake crocodile could be one of those not being captured and which still continues to breed in Jurong Lake, perhaps !

55 Feet Long Unknown Fish Species Found in China

Picture is (C) copyright to ibtimes

A 55 feet long fish has been found in the seashore of Guangdong, China.

According to a local newspaper, the big fish weighs at least 10,000 pounds.

Hwang, a 66-years-old fisherman living in the near area, said he has never seen anything like this in his whole life and that the fish was tied with ropes when it was first found.

Many people have flocked to see this strange specimen since its discovery, although its rotting corpse already emits a foul smell.

The people living in the area think the fish was caught by some fisherman but was abandoned due to its heavy weight, hence the ropes.

Due to the serious decay of the fish's body, it is almost impossible to identify the species, according to the local newspaper.

The fish was discovered on April 25th.

Kangaroo Sightings Persist In Japan’s Mayama Mountains

abc.net.au – It may seem odd, but the locals swear it is right. People in a Japanese mountain region have reported a number of kangaroo sightings, and journalists are now trying to stalk the marsupials.

The descriptions given by the apparent eyewitnesses seem close enough. For years they have spoken of a beige animal with large ears, one to 1.5 metres tall, that stands by the roadside and then hops away.

The sightings were all reported in the Mayama mountain district of Osaki city in Miyagi prefecture, a community of 441 households, located about 350 kilometres north of Tokyo.

The city has received about 30 reports of “kangaroo-like animals”, including three cases since December, when the mountain area was often covered in snow, said local official Tetsuya Sasaki.

Asian 'Unicorn' Captured, Dies in Laos

Asian 'unicorn,' the twin-horned Saola, was spotted in Laos. Due to its rarity, the animal is likened to the mythical unicorn.

Laotian villagers found and captured the Saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis) and took it back to their community in August and it died a few days later, a report issued by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) said.

It is not clear as to why the villagers captured the animal, which they found in the forest held sacred by locals in the remote Xaychamphon District.

Before it died, it was photographed—the first record confirmed since 1999, when automatic camera traps took pictures of the species.

No biologist has ever seen a Saola in the wild, IUCN noted.

"The government of Lao PDR and WCS are to be commended for their rapid response and efforts to save this animal,” William Robichaud, Coordinator of the IUCN Saola Working Group said in a statement.

Dracula Fish Found in Myanmar is a New Species

March 11, 2009--While he may not vant to suck your blood, the male fish seen above does sport spooky-looking fangs that have earned it the name Danionella dracula.

Researchers at London's Natural History Museum found several of the new species (bottom) in a tank of aquarium fish. Initially museum staff had thought the 0.7-inch-long (1.7-centimeter-long) creatures, caught in Myanmar (Burma), were part of an already known, related species.

"After a year or so in captivity, they started dying," museum scientist Ralf Britz told BBC News.

"When I preserved them and looked at them under the microscope, I thought, my God, what is this, they can't be teeth."

In fact, the fangs are not true teeth—the line of fish that gave rise to D. dracula is thought to have lost teeth around 50 million years ago.
