Super fireball lights up evening sky in N China

China's Xinhua News Agency reported a golden UFO appeared in the northwestern sky and was seen by some citizens in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei on the evening of Nov 30. Astronomers said it was a super fireball that is rarely seen.

Ma Qiang is an amateur astronomer living in Tianjin who witnessed the flying fireball. He said the fireball glittered and flew from northwest to the west around 5:25 pm and disappeared after two seconds. Its golden lights were brighter than the moon.

Some citizens in Beijing also saw the fireball and reported the incident. Director of Beijing Planetarium Zhu Jin said the glittering object is a super bright fireball that is rarely seen, according to descriptions given by the witnesses.

Astronomers say a fireball is a kind of meteor that has seldom been observed. Flying in the aerosphere, the fireball sometimes sounds like a pen scratching on paper. It is brighter than Venus at night.

Why Ghosts Get 'Spooked' by HD Cameras

"Paranormal Activity 3," the latest in a series of successful low-budget horror films about amateur ghost hunters, opens on Friday (Oct. 21). The first film, released in 2007, was a surprise indie hit around the world.

The films are shot in a "found footage" style, in which the audience is treated to footage supposedly taken in real life from home videos and security cameras. This technique, often involving handheld cameras and actors talking to the camera operator, has been around for years but was widely popularized in the 1999 film "The Blair Witch Project."

The grainy, low-budget look of the films is no accident; it was done partly because the films actually are low-budget, and partly for added "realism." The fact that the low-quality picture skips and jitters adds to the suspense, and Horror Filmmaking 101 teaches that a dark, partly obscured monster is much scarier than one that's seen clearly in bright light.

It's been an effective technique in the first two films, scaring up hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office. And it's also true in real-life ghost hunting: Virtually all of the "evidence" for ghosts appears in the form of brief, ambiguous anomalies recorded with low-quality cameras (or good-quality cameras sabotaged by low-light conditions).

People have long reported weird, ghostly and paranormal activity, but perhaps the biggest mystery is why the evidence — especially the photographic evidence — hasn't improved. Are ghosts afraid of high-definition cameras?

North Korean despot threatens to shoot down 100ft ‘Christmas tree’

Atheist North Korea has threatened to shoot out the lights of a giant Christmas tree-shaped tower that South Korea plans to illuminate near the tense border.

The Communist North warned its southern enemy of ‘unexpected consequences’ if it went ahead to turn on the lights, saying Seoul would bear the ‘entire responsibilities’.

South Korea plans to illuminate about 100,000 lights on the 100ft-tall steel tower in the shape of a Christmas tree at the top of Aegibong Hill, located some two miles from the border with North Korea.

Officials in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, say that switching on the Christmas lights is an act of propaganda because they will be visible with the naked eye from the major northern border city of Kaesong.
It is thought that North Korea is concerned the lights will be regarded as a sign of the affluence of the South and will weaken the regime’s ideological control of its hungry people.

The North Korean website Uriminjokkiri has denounced the Christmas lights plan, saying it is aimed at provoking the North and stepping up anti-North Korea psychological warfare.

Saudi woman beheaded for ‘practicing witchcraft’

RIYADH: A Saudi woman was beheaded Monday after being convicted of practising sorcery, which is banned in the ultra-conservative kingdom, the Interior Ministry said.

Amina bint Abdulhalim Nassar was executed in the northern province of Jawf for “practising witchcraft and sorcery,” the ministry said in a statement carried by SPA state news agency.

It is not clear how many women have been executed in the desert-kingdom, but another woman was beheaded in October for killing her husband by setting his house on fire.

The beheading took to 73 the number of executions in Saudi Arabia this year.

In September, Amnesty International called on the Muslim kingdom where 140 people were on death row to establish an “immediate moratorium on executions.”

The rights group said Saudi Arabia was one of a minority of states which voted against a U.N. General Assembly resolution last December calling for a worldwide moratorium on executions.

Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia’s strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law.

Amnesty says Saudi Arabia executed 27 convicts in 2010, compared to 67 executions announced the year before.

Awesome NASA Video Captures What Looks Like an Alien Spaceship

A camera on board NASA's STEREO A satellite seems to have captured video of an unknown thing that looks like an actual spaceship. The blip appeared when a Sun's coronal mass ejection (CME) reached planet Mercury. Watch the video and judge by yourself.

Update: whatever it is, it appears on the images taken by STEREO twin satellite too. Check out the new video, taken at the same time, taken from the opposite side of the action.

What is happening in the video?

The video shows a coronal mass ejection coming from the Sun and reaching the planet Mercury. Coronal mass ejections are massive explosions of solar wind, radiation and magnetic fields that go well beyond the solar corona, deep into space. They are so big that sometimes they reach Earth.

You can see the gigantic solar wave reaching Mercury but, just as it goes through, something else becomes visible: a very angular shape that seems to be formed by two separate objects joined together. It looks as if the CME wave reveals a volume on impact, interacting with it.

You know, like a cloaked Klingon Bird of Prey being uncovered by the Sun's radioactive fury.

Students claim toilet haunted, faint en mass

Many students in Phu Yen Province have fainted after claiming that a toilet inside their dorm is haunted and they have seen ghosts.

Phan Van Tho, headmaster of the Son Hoa Ethnic Boarding High School in Son Hoa District, confirmed that a large number of boarding students have fainted or screamed at nights from unknown causes during the past month.

The time they acted strange was usually from about 8 pm to 11 pm every night, Tho said.

The first victim of the awful situation is K Pa Ho Luon, of Son Dinh Commune.

One night in early November, after coming back to his dorm room from the toilet area, Luon fell down to the floor, talked nonsense, scratched against the floor and walls with his two hands, and then passed out.

After being hospitalized at the Son Hoa General Hospital, Luon recovered and told everyone that he had met a ghost in the restroom.

Many other students later suffered the same condition as Luon, and there happened a case in which 12 students collapsed unconscious at the same time.

Such a situation has caused an atmosphere of fear among students and many dared not stay in the dormitory but hired houses or rooms outside the school.

Many students have been so haunted by ‘the ghosts’ that they dare not sleep alone or go to the restrooms after dark.

All of the fainted students were taken to the hospital for emergency treatment, Tho said.

Tho could not explain what had really happened to his students but he rejected the rumor that the schools’ toilet area was haunted.

The school’s management has held meetings with parents and students to call on them to stay calm, pending an investigation by relevant agencies.

According to doctors at the hospital, some students might have passed out because of hypocalcaemia (low calcium levels in blood).

Pontianak – Malaysia’s undying vampire

The video recording doesn't show any figures or apparitions, but you can hear the laugh of a girl breaking the quiet of the night. The recording was made at 1.48am at an old abandoned Chinese cemetery in Sungai Petani, Kedah in March 2009.

Paranormal investigator and Malaysian Ghost Research founder Augustine Towonsing said the "girl's distinct laugh", recorded during his investigations, is one which most people have described as the laugh of a Pontianak.

Towonsing is a firm believer that ghosts exist in the form of pure energy which has no fixed physical appearance, rather they are based on electromagnetic fields, making their presence felt on electrical scanners and cameras.

"Therefore, seeing ghosts in the form of Pontianak, for instance, is only an explanation of another metaphysic of a ghost appearance, and this appearance may still be relevant in modern days based on how we like to see them," he told Yahoo! in an email interview.

But, despite having almost a decade of experience in paranormal studies and ghost research, Towonsing still believes configurations like the Pontianak exist based on evidence he obtained from that investigation in Sungai Petani. This belief is strengthened by his ability to "see" spirits, which caused Towonsing to continue his career in the paranormal field.

Will this be the first time the world sees the Ark of Covenant?

A very British problem of a leaky church roof could be about to give the world the chance to glimpse the legendary Ark of the Covenant.

That's because the claimed home of the iconic relic - a small chapel in Ethiopia - has sprung a leak and so the Ark could now be on the move.

The Ark - which The Bible says holds God's Ten Commandments given to Moses on Mount Sinai - is said to have been kept in Aksum, in the Chapel of the Tablet, adjacent to St Mary of Zion Church, since the 1960s.

According to the Old Testament, it was first kept in the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem for centuries until a Babylonian invasion in the 6th century BC.

Since then it's been the goal of many adventurers and archaeologists to find it. Most-famously, but also fictitiously, Indiana Jones was shown in the 1981 Steven Spielberg film Raiders of the Lost Ark.

There has also been a long-running claim from the Orthodox Christians of Ethiopia that they have had the Ark for centuries, and since the 1960s it has apparently been kept in the chapel.

This small and curiously-styled building is surrounded by spiked iron railings, and situated between two churches, the old and new, of St Mary of Zion in central Aksum.

Experts stumped by ancient Jerusalem markings

JERUSALEM (AP) — Mysterious stone carvings made thousands of years ago and recently uncovered in an excavation underneath Jerusalem have archaeologists stumped.

Israeli diggers who uncovered a complex of rooms carved into the bedrock in the oldest section of the city recently found the markings: Three "V'' shapes cut next to each other into the limestone floor of one of the rooms, about 2 inches (5 centimeters) deep and 20 inches (50 centimeters) long. There were no finds to offer any clues pointing to the identity of who made them or what purpose they served.

The archaeologists in charge of the dig know so little that they have been unable even to posit a theory about their nature, said Eli Shukron, one of the two directors of the dig.

"The markings are very strange, and very intriguing. I've never seen anything like them," Shukron said.

The shapes were found in a dig known as the City of David, a politically sensitive excavation conducted by Israeli government archaeologists and funded by a nationalist Jewish group under the Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan in east Jerusalem. The rooms were unearthed as part of the excavation of fortifications around the ancient city's only natural water source, the Gihon spring.

It is possible, the dig's archaeologists say, that when the markings were made at least 2,800 years ago the shapes might have accommodated some kind of wooden structure that stood inside them, or they might have served some other purpose on their own. They might have had a ritual function or one that was entirely mundane. Archaeologists faced by a curious artifact can usually at least venture a guess about its nature, but in this case no one, including outside experts consulted by Shukron and the dig's co-director, archaeologists with decades of experience between them, has any idea.
