Japan's Most Haunted Forest - Aokigahara

Author: Craig Hawkins

Aokigahara is a forest that lies at the base of Mount Fuji. It is also known as The Sea of Trees. The caverns in the forest are made of rock an ice even when it is summer.
After the first kilometer and the known tourist attractions Ice Cave and Wind Cave, there is very little sign of human contact.

Compasses are known to fail some people by giving false readings because of the high iron in the rocks, this is said to only happen to people with commercially brought compasses as US Militery regular use the forest as a place for training practices and their military grade lensatic compasses are known to function properly.

Avoid Ghost in Hotels

By: Ms Ching

In Asia countries, many ghostly sightings have been reported regarding hotel rooms. The people in Asia are very particular about choosing a hotel room. Genting Highland Pahang in Malaysia, an entertainment resort is regard as one of the most haunted place in Asia. Several people have committed suicide here either by hanging in their room or jumping down from the window of their room. Some rooms are not for rent no matter how much you willing to pay for. Another phenomenon is that a lot of hotels does not have the 13th floor, they will replace with it with the 14th floor. The 13th floor is considered to be the portal to the underworld. Spiritual entities could gain access into our world thru the 13th floor. I will avoid both floors because I knew that the 14th floor is actually the 13th floor in disguise.

These phenomenons are not just across Asia but also in hotels in Las Vegas. According to my friends in Singapore, Singapore Polytechnics, a tertiary campus had their block 13 removed as it was rumor that many strange occurrences had happened in this block in the past. Below is some guidelines and taboos I have compile, it serve to educate the unwary.

Ghost Marriage in Chinese Religion

You've probably seen "ghost marriage" in chinese movies.

Ghost marriage is called "Gui Hun 鬼婚" in chinese. Such marriage is also often called "Ming Hun 冥婚" or "Ying Hun 阴婚". It refers to marriage in the non-human realms, such as the underworld, the realm of ghosts, realm of hell etc.

Ghost marriage formed a part of the ancient chinese marriage practice that had its root dating from Pre-Qin era. In the Book of Rites 《周礼》, it was recorded “禁迁葬者,与嫁殇者。” (forbid the moving of the tombs/coffin of those who had passed away and died young, but getting marry). This implies that if a person had not married, but had died at an early age, he/she could still undergo a marriage ritual for him to 'get married in the underworld'.

The ancient chinese emphasized greatly on marriage when a person reached a certain age. In ancient times, a man will usually get married at 20 years old while a girl will get married at 15 years old. If he died without getting married, he would not enjoy the practice of worshipping/honoring by their relatives. In addition, if a person died young but had no partner, it would seem very sad for such a person. This is probably the origin of Ghost marriage

Ghost marriage (Chinese)

In Chinese tradition, a ghost marriage (also known as a Minghun or spirit marriage) is a marriage in which one or both parties are deceased. [1] Other forms of ghost marriage are practiced worldwide, from Sudan, to India, to post-World War I France (see Levirate marriage, ghost marriage in Sudan, posthumous marriage). The origins of Chinese ghost marriage are largely unknown, and reports of it being practiced today can still be found.

1. Types of ghost marriage
Chinese ghost marriage was usually set up by the family of the deceased and performed for a number of reasons, including: the marriage of a couple previously engaged before one member’s death, to integrate an unmarried daughter into a patrilineage, to ensure the family line is continued, or to maintain that no younger brother is married before an elder brother.

1. 1. Previously engaged
Upon the death of her fiancé, a bride could choose to go through with the wedding, in which the groom was represented by a white cockerel at the ceremony. However, some girls were hesitant since this form of ghost marriage required her to participate in the funeral ritual, mourning customs (including strict dress and conduct standards), take a vow of celibacy, and immediately take up residence with his family. A groom also had the option of marrying his late fiancée, with no disadvantages, but there have been no records of such weddings.

Malaysia Urban Legends – Types of Malay Ghosts

There are many kinds of beliefs in this world about the types of ghosts. One of the more popular types of ghosts in our local culture are the Malay ghosts. Of course, there are also the Chinese ghosts, English ghosts and even Indian ghosts depending on your religion, race and beliefs. For example, a vampire is an English ghost version whereas Malays simply knows them as “pontianak” and Chinese as “Kiong Xi”.

Malays believe that ghosts are usually only active at night especially during the full moon where it is belief to be the most powerful time for the underworld. Of course, be it fact or just simply another Malaysian Urban Legend, we’ll never know. Below are a lists of the types of Malay Ghosts

Pontianak – also known as the vampire where it is belief that they are usually ladies dressed in white seeking for revenge. The pontianak is said to be the spirit of a woman died of childbirth. Most of the time, they can look very beautiful but if you look closely, she would have razor sharp teeth. They usually comes out after the sun sets searching for men or pregnant women (apparently, it is said that she could not bear the thought of other women being able to enjoy motherhood) to suck blood. Sometimes, they even eat the flesh of babies ripped out from their mother’s womb.
Toyol – these are actually ghostly kids that people adopt for the objective of stealing other people’s money. It is believed that this spirit is kept and preserved in a jar in a form of a foetus. Because the toyol is kept by people to do bidding, you have to feed it with blood everyday.

Real Ghost caught on Cell Phone - Pocong

A pochong is a Malaysian/ Indonesian ghost that is said to be the soul of a dead person trapped in their suit. The pocong suit (shroud) is used by Muslims to cover the body of the dead person. They cover the dead body with white fabric called mori and tie the clothing over the head, under the feet, and on the neck. According to the native beliefs, the soul of a dead person will stay on the earth for 40 days after the death. When the ties aren't released after 40 days, the body is said to jump out from the grave to warn people that the soul need the bonds to be released. After the ties are released, the soul will leave the earth and never show up anymore. Because of the tie under the feet, the ghost can't walk. This causes the pocong to hop.

Haunting of Sentosa Singapore

Article from Ms. Ching

Sentosa Today
Sentosa Island, the land of peace and tranquility is located at the southwest side of Singapore city center. Knowledge about the geography of Sentosa Island is a must in order to understand its charm. Sentosa Island is a 5 square kilometers stretch of land, which is just a quarter of a mile away from the southern coast of the main island of Singapore. One will find that 70% of the island is covered with rain forest, the favorite dwelling place of monkeys, monitor lizards, peacocks and parrots. Sentosa is a good collection of a wide range of flora and fauna.

Sentosa in the Past
Sentosa was a war zone between many countries in South East Asia. It was believed that the Indonesian is its first legitimate ruler. Sentosa was made into a cemetery by its various Indonesian rulers. The bodies of the deceased will be shipped across from the mainland to this remote island for burials. In the 1840s, there is an epidemic outbreak that killed almost every person living in Sentosa island. The Indonesian had named Sentosa as Pulau Blakang Mati (Island of Dead from the Behind) after the epidemic. The epidemic was caused by malaria as diagnosed in 1898.

The island was a stronghold of pirates before the rules of the Indonesians. Treasures were believed to remained in this island after the pirates left.

Real Encounters with Spiritual Entities in Sentosa Island
I had received some forwarded email regarding Siloso beach Sentosa. In the email it says that the Siloso beach & the deep waters of Sentosa should be avoid during the night. A Chinese girl stayed in the beach to enjoy the midnight breeze and returned home with something additional. Marks that resembled a human hands of infant to an adult were spotted on her bodies. There also finger nails marks as well.

The girl with her family went to a Chinese temple to seek advice on this matter. The high priest told the girl and her family that it was a child water ghost wanting to drown her and this explained the child’s hand mark on her body.

The adult’s hand mark on her body was caused by another ghost. The priest explained that the child does not have the strength to drown her. The adult was not trying to steal the credits for himself. It was lending a helping hand to the child.

The high priest also explained about ghost in Chinese tradition. In order for a spirit to reincarnate as a human, they must harm or trick a human into death. The spirit of the newly death will replace their position in the underworld so they could live again.

The girl is still living today from that incident where the spirits failed to drown her. The high priest explained that she had survived the attacked not by chance. He could sense the aura of her parents. They are very devoted Buddhist and offer their prayer and services to the Buddha frequently. The girl was bless from the deeds of her parents. The priest also provided some information about the spirits trying to drown her. He suggested that the spirits were the victims of drowning in this beach recently. They were young spirit and did not attained magic yet as they could not concealed their doings.

According to Chinese traditions, water should be avoid everywhere during the Chinese Lunar month. This is the month where spirits were able to roam the land freely. Sentosa today is a very safe place to visit and one should not be afraid. As a developed tourist attractions in Singapore, the “Yang Qi” of Sentosa is overwhelming.

Rebirth - Real Cases from India and Sri Lanka

Article from Ms. Ching

I have always been fascinated about the myth on rebirth. As a Buddhist, rebirth is part of our religious faith. I am not going to stress out on religion, but I am going to present you to some of the most controversy real life stories and they are not related to Buddhism. They are just real events that had happened. Read some extraordinary and unbelievable cases in Asia describing child Prodigies and provide some insight into the subject ‘Rebirth’ you will have to judge for yourself.

The Case of Gnanatilaka
Gnanatilaka is her name. She was born on 14th February 1956 in Kotamale in Sri Lanke (Ceylon). The case started in 1960 when she was 4 ½ years old. Then she told her parents, “I want to see my father and mother.”

Gnanatilaka insisted that she know where her ‘real’ parents are and she will direct her parents to them. Her parents ignore her at first but as day passes, she would constantly pester her parents to bring her to her ‘real’ parents. As a result she led her parents to a tea estate near Talawakele, about 30 miles from where she lives now.

This story soon began to spread. A few professors from the University of Ceylon and Venerable Piyadassi Maha Thera came to know of this story. Hey decided to investigate. They listen to Gnanatilaka tell her story about the time when she was a boy whose name was Tilakaratna. They recorded everything in details and went with Gnanatilaka to visit the house where she described.

In the present life of Gnanatilaka, she had never visited the house or any particular area near this house. The two families also do not have any relation with each other and did not know of each other existences.

When Gnanatilaka enter the house, she pointed to her parents and introduces them to the professors. She gives the correct nicknames of each family member in the house.

The former life parents were interviewed; they described the character and habits of their son who had passed away on 9th November 1954. Gnanatilaka refuse to talk with her former younger brother. The former parents explained that the two brothers is always fighting and quarrelling with each other. Perhaps Gnanatilaka was still holding the grudges from her previous life when she was a boy.

When the local school head master heard of the story, he went to visit the house to see for himself. Gnanatilaka immediately recognized the head master. She was even able to describe the homework in detail given to her former life by the head master.

The story soon spread far across the world. A researcher who specified in rebirth cases, Dr. Ian Stevenson of the University of Virginia, flew from America to Ceylon to investigate the case. After the investigation, he said that this case was one of the best in the subject rebirth, both in evidential detail and in psychological aspects.

The Case of a girl from Sri Lanka
A seven year old girl student of Sri Lanka won every prize for Indian Dancing. She displayed all the qualities of a professional dancer. When ask on her success, she describe that she learned the skills from her elder sister in India. She even gives vivid details on the place she lives in India.
