Different names

Hari Raya Puasa can be in simple terms defined as the New year of the Muslims on their Islamic calendar.

However this term, Hari Raya Puasa is a common name known only in Singapore and Malaysia. This day itself, has actually many names in different countries.

The actual name for it is called as Eid ul-Fitr (د الفط) in Arabic!

What is Hari Raya Puasa ( Eid ul-Fitr (د الفط)) ?

To be more specific of exactly what this festival really is all about, this Festival itself, marks the end of Ramadanand it is therefore a Public holiday to all Muslims around the world. Ramadan is the 9th month of Islamic calendar which is the Islamic month of Fasting, in which muslims are to refrine from eating, drinking and sex from sunrise to sunset daily.

The reason for fasting is to teach Muslims on patience, humility and spirituality. They fast for the sake of God ( Allah) and they are to offer prayers than the usual. They would ask God for forgivness or thier past sins and seek for God’s guidance to help in their everyday life to refraine themselves from evil and have purification through self-restraints as well as good deeds.

To the Muslims, Ramadan is an auspicious month where which it would be the revelations of God to mankind .

On this day of Eid Ul Fitr (د الفط) , it is by God’s Command that they are to complete their Fast on the last day of Ramadan. After the completion of their fast, Muslims would have God’s praises , recited throught this period of EID ( the commonly abbreviation of Eid ul-Fitr).

How is it Celebrated ?

During this day, somewhat and somehow something similiar to Chinese New year in only certain aspects, Muslims would be waking up early to visit and greet family members, relatives, neighbours and friends.

The greetings can be different based on local languages and dialects of the different countries. In Arbic, their way of greeting one another would be Eid Mubārak which means Blessed Eid or it could also be Eid Sa‘eed that they would use which means Happy Eid.

In Turkey their greeting would be Bayramınız kutlu olsun which means may your Eid be happy. In Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore, it will be commonly be as Salamat Hari Raya Pussa.

During this day, Muslims would be told and encourage to forgive and forget others for any wrongs and mistakes done by others onto them as well as asking for forgiveness from others on whatever wrongs or mistakes done on their part onto others.

During this year, any differences or past animosities among one another should be chuck aside and to be forgotten and forgiven. May the beyond be the beyond and everything to be start afresh. It is about love , care and respect that should be emphasis on.

Like the Chinese, Muslims have wear new clothes during this day. Any clothes that are old should not be worn. It is only totally new clothes can be worn during this day.

During Eid, they forbidden to fast ! Hence they would have a small breakfast at home before leaving house.

During the exchange of greetings and visiting among themselves, there would be some small gifts given by the adults to the children which can be cards or a small of money in a packet known as the green packet which is similar to the Chinese except that to the Chinese it is Red packets but the ideal to it is pretty similar, somehow.

Numbers '4' and '8' may have led to Manila hostage tragedy

STOMPer Jason, a practioner of numerology, the study of numbers and how they affect a person's life, believes that the many occurrences of the numbers 4 and 8 in the recent tourist bus hijack incident in Manila might have led to its tragic outcome.



Eight Hong Kong tourists were left dead after disgruntled ex-policeman Rolando Mendoze took the passengers hostage before opening fire.

It was his desperate bid to get his job back.

These are some of the points STOMPer Jason mentioned after studying the occurrences of the numbers 4 and 8 in the case:

"In Chinese perspective, 4 is usually associated with bad luck due to its pronunciation 'say' in Cantonese and “si” in mandarin. It means death. The 8, 'fa' in both languages means prosperity.

"8 in its 'good' extreme bring prosperity. However, in its 'bad' extreme, brings disaster and unexpected outcomes. Being divisible of 8, 4 inherits a portion of these elements.

"The date on the 23 August itself, the day and month adds to a 4 (2+3+8 = 13, 1+3 = 4).

"The dismissed Senior Inspector Rolando Mendoza who took over a tour bus in Rizal Park, Manila had a 4 when his name is being tabulated. In his birth date, 10 October 1955 it is a 4 (1+0+1+0+1+9+5+5 = 22, 2+2 = 4), when the numbers added up. Adding both the name and birth date gives 8.

"On that morning when he hijacked a tour bus carrying 25 tourists from Hong Kong in an attempt to get his job back. He became the 26th person on board. 2+6 = 8.

"When the last of the hostages were released at 4pm, there were 16 hostages on board. 16 is divisible by 4 and 8. When Rolando Mendoza was included, it became 17. 1+7 = 8.

"Shots were heard and the bus driver, Alberto Lubang escaped the bus through the window on 1930 hours. 1+9+3+0 = 13, 1+3 = 4.

"At 7:37pm (7+3+7 = 17, 1+7 = 8), assault teams began to surround the bus.

"Rolando Mendoza’s lifeless body was seen hanging out the door of the bus at 2043 (2+0+4+3 = 9) hours. Numerology’s interpretation of 9 means completion and ending.

"The whole situation ended with the death of Rolando. On the day itself, He was also going through a 9th personal day, a day of ending.

"Of the 8 hostages who were killed, 4 of them whose names added up gave 8. The only hostage whose birth detail was available, Masa Ting Chunn Tse, the tour guide was born on the 05 September 1979 (5+9+1+9+7+9 = 40, 4+0 = 4).

"His name added to 8. His funeral on the 05 September 2010 adds to 8. Therefore, it will not be surprising that among all the killed hostages, there will be elements of 4s or 8s in their names or birth details."

God did not create Universe

LONDON - GOD no longer has any place in theories on the creation of the Universe due to a series of developments in physics, British scientist Stephen Hawking said in extracts published on Thursday from a new book.

In a hardening of the more accommodating position on religion that he took in his 1988 international best-seller 'A Brief History of Time', Dr Hawking said the Big Bang was merely the consequence of the law of gravity.

'Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist,' he writes in 'The Grand Design', which is being serialised by The Times newspaper. 'It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the Universe going,' added the wheelchair-bound expert.

Dr Hawking has achieved worldwide fame for his research, writing and television documentaries despite suffering since the age of 21 motor neurone disease that has left him disabled and dependent on a voice synthesiser.

Hungry Ghosts do not scare Malaysian couples

PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA - The month-long Hungry Ghost Festival isn't usually the most popular time for those who want to get married.

But some are throwing caution the wind and going ahead with their nuptial vows.

In Penang, the Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society, saw 10 couples getting married last Sunday. For the next three weeks, we only have two or three couples each week, said its secretary Cher Yeong How.

However, those numbers are smaller than usual. The society conducts marriage registrations for about 20 couples every Sunday.

The Chinese Hungry Ghost Festival

It began in the Age of Fragmentation as the Ullambana (Yulanpeng) feast on the 15th day (full moon) of the 7th lunar month, held to commemorate the Buddhist legend of Moggallana (Mulian), who descended to hell to save his deceased mother's soul. The feast was held to give food to pretas, or Hungry Ghosts - spirits who had been reborn in hell because of their misdeeds and suffered from thirst and hunger there. This corresponded with pre-Buddhist Chinese views of the afterlife, in which offerings could be made to the dead in the Underworld in the form of food or other items. But the tradition developed that during the 7th month, the spirits in the Underworld would actually be released into the mortal world to feed on food offerings. Hence the popular view of the Festival came to be that these spirits must be appeased with offerings of incense, food and burned 'hell money', otherwise they might disturb the living.

Beijing is the worse place to be an example on how traditions are kept due to its political role. My college classmates know nothing about real old Chinese traditions, except Beijing opera (I attended college in Beijing). Once a friend who studied folklore asked me about rabbit's role in Chinese tradition and I asked her whether she knew about rabbit king folklore in Fujian province, she knew nothing. Here you go, how some Bejing or Shanghai big urbanites are

Also, at 15th day of the 7th month, the gate to the ghost world is open, and ghosts would be allowed to come back to the world of human to visit their family members. This is a Chinese legend with some Buddhist and Daoist influence. Therefore, most Chinese families would offer food for their ancestors who come back for a visit. I think the ghost gate is closed at the end of the month, and all ghosts must go back to the underworld. Therefore, to be safe, the 7th month is not lucky to do anything, such as marry. People who are born in the 7th month is considered the escaping ghost of the underworld, and sometimes the mothers (or fathers also) would be worried that the kings of the underworld would send someone to take these children back, especially the ones who are born between the 15th day and the 30th day. My father was born at the 19th day of the 7th month, and I remember hearing him mentioning of this fact. He was quite a sturdy boy any way, but he did fall and broke his head in the river while herding cows when he was either 3 or 4 years old (and right before the age, about 7, where the underworld has a greater claim on the children).

Why have so many dogs leapt to their deaths from Overtoun Bridge?

For Donna Cooper, the worst thing about watching her collie dog, Ben, leap to his death has been the effect it has had on her two-year-old son Callum. 'Nearly a year on, Callum still asks about Ben. He was very upset by the dog's death and wants to know if his leg has been fixed in heaven,' she says.

Just 12 months previously, Donna, her husband and son were walking their dog across the picturesque Overtoun Bridge in Milton, near Dumbarton, Scotland. Without warning, Ben leapt over a parapet on the century-old granite bridge and fell 50ft to his death on the rocks below.

'His paw was broken, his jaw was broken and his back was broken and badly twisted. The vet decided it wasn't worth putting him through the pain, so we had to let him go,' recalls Donna.

1. Belgian UFO wave

From November 1989 till April 1990, a series of sightings of triangular shaped UFOs occurred in Belgium. This photo, taken by J.S. Henrardi, showed one of the UFOs flying in the air. The Belgian Air Force examined the photo but could not offer any plausible explanations for it.

This photo was taken on Trindade Island on January 16, 1958. A crew of explorers taking part in a scientific project witnessed the UFO. To this day because of the certification of the witnesses and the official recognition, the object in the pictures remain unexplained.

A Navy photographer named Delbert Newhouse and his wife witnessed a formation of brilliant metallic looking disc shaped objects in the sky. The officer immediately took photos of it, and after careful evaluation by experts at the Photo Reconnaissance Laboratory of the Air Force Intelligence, they declared them genuine.

Shel Alpert, saw four brilliant lights in the sky at Salem, Massachusetts on July 16, 1952. He called another Guardsman to see the lights, but in those few seconds the lights had become more dim. When they brightened again, he quickly took a single photograph through the window of the office. This photo has been published in many books, newspapers and magazines.

Over Gulf Breeze, Florida in 1987, a series of sightings occurred. Ed Walters, a contractor from the area, took some very extraordinary UFO photos. He also claimed to have seen humanoid aliens. The Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), an American organization dedicated to investigating UFO claims all over the world, investigated Walters' photos and concluded they were genuine.

6. Ilkley Moor Sighting

On the morning of 1st December, police officer Alan Godfrey claimed that he came across an alien entity while crossing the Moor, in the county of Yorkshire. He described the being as small, humanoid and green.

Godfrey managed to take a quick photograph of it, which seemed to startled the entity. He gave chase and was amazed to see a metallic domed spaceship behind a rock formation. He could not remember what happened in the next two hours; however, under hypnosis, he said he was abducted by the aliens and shown some images pertaining to Earth's environmental destruction.

This sighting occurred in Great Falls, Montana, in August 1950. Nick Mariana and his secretary, witnessed two bright silvery objects, rotating while flying over Great Falls. He rushed to his car, retrieved his camera and managed to film some footage of the UFOs.

The McMinnville UFO photographs were taken on a farm near McMinnville, Oregon in 1950. The photos have since been subject to a fierce debate, with many UFO experts claiming them to be true, while skeptics insisting they are fraud.

Paul and Eveyln Trent, who owned the farm, took the photos and subsequently, they had not received any fame or fortune from publicizing the photos.

9. Rex Heflin Photos

Rex Heflin, a highway inspector, was at work on August 3, 1965 In Santa Ana, California, when he saw a rod shaped object hovering in the air above his truck. He managed to take a few photos before the UFO flew away.

Experts from UPI (United Press International) and National Investigations Committee On Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) examined the photos and concluded they were genuine.

10. Solway Firth Astronaut

On 23 May 1964, Jim Templeton took his 5 year old daughter to Burgh Marsh, situated near Burgh by Sands and overlooking the Solway Firth in Cumbria, England for a day trip. He took some photos of her, and after developing, noticed that one of the photos seemed to show a figure "floating" behind her.

Templeton claims that the only other people on the marsh that day were some old ladies and that no one else was in the photo frame when he took the pictures. Furthermore, other photos of the girl in the same pose did not show the floating figure.

On closer analysis, the figure seems to be wearing a astronaut's space suit. But what would be an astronaut be doing out in the open field in the middle of the day wearing a space suit? And it seemed to be floating in mid air at an awkward angle.

Kodak experts have analysed the photo and declared them genuine, but were unable to offer any reasonable explanation for them. They offered a reward to anyone who comes forward to explain the photo. Till date, it has not been claimed.

10 cryptids that turned out to be real animals

Throughout history, many people have described encountering animals that, either to contemporary views or evidence, are too fantastical to be true. Did you know that in the mid 19th century, European explorers visiting Africa were ridiculed after describing an ferocious animal which could stand upright like a man, with black hair and used their hands to feed? People had thought that this was a mythical creature.

It wasn't until many years later when dead specimens were brought back, that people came to believe in the existence of an animal called the Gorilla.

This could be what is happening currently. Many supposed cryptids have not been proven to be real animals sufficiently of their existence due to lack of proof or sightings.

So without further ado, this is a list of 10 animals which were once labelled as cryptids.

1. Kangaroo

Yes, first on the list is the Kangaroo, which could be surprising to you, since it is so common nowadays. But early settlers in Australia had described bizarre creatures never before seen by Europeans. They wrote of creatures with heads like deer that stood upright like men and hopped like frogs. The creatures sometimes sported two heads – one on their shoulders, and one on the stomach.

Such accounts were understandably disregarded and ridiculed by fellow colleagues. However, all changed in the 1770s, when a dead specimen of this odd beast was exhibited in England as a public curiosity.

2. Cuvier's beaked whale

This whale is the only species of the genus Ziphius. In the Middle Ages, this animal was thought to be a monster with a fish body and a head of an owl. It was also said to be able to pierce ships with its sharp fins.

Today, this creature is found as far north as the Shetland Islands and as south as Tierra Del Fuego at the tip of South America. It is the only member of the genus Ziphius, which bears the name of its legendary identity. Georges Cuvier, a French naturalist, first described it in 1823.

3. evil Bird

The Devil Bird, or Ulama was described by Sri Lankan fokelore as a horned bird capable of producing blood-curdling screams similar to those of a wailing woman. Its screams were perceived as a omen of death. For centuries, the nocturnal cries of the Devil Bird were the only evidence of its existence; Western science wrote if off as mere superstition.

Then, in 2001, the Devil Bird was identified as a new species of owl, the spot-bellied eagle owl (bubo nipalensis). The largest of all Sri Lankan owls, the bubo nipalensis matches the description of the Ulama perfectly, down to its characteristic screech and tufted “horns”. Although some debate still remains as to the true identity of the Devil-Bird, the spot-bellied eagle owl stands as the most compelling source of inspiration for this mysterious creature.

4. Coelacanth

The Coelacanth first appeared in the fossil record in the Middle Devonian. It has been thought to be extinct for 80 million years, until the first Latimeria specimen was found off the east coast of South Africa, off the Chalumna River in 1938.

Local fishermen had long known about this fish, Hendrik Goosen, a ship captain had caught such a specimen in East London, South Africa in 1938. Unable to identify the species, he sought the help of the curator of the museum in East London. The curator failed to identify the fish too, until Professor James Leonard Brierley Smith positively identified it as the Coelacanth.

5. Platypus

Early European settlers first encountered this strange creature in 1978. It was described as a egg laying mammal with a duck bill, beaver tail and venomous spikes. Even after a dead specimen was sent back to Britain, scientists thought it was a hoax - a elaborate sewn-together fraud.

Today, we know of the Platypus as the only mammals, as well as Echidnas, who lay eggs. It also swims with webbed feet, uses electrolocation to hunt, and possesses an ankle spur that, in males, can deliver a powerful injection of venom. While non-lethal to humans, this venom is excruciatingly painful and is not responsive to most pain-killers.

6. Sea Serpent

Throughout ancient history, Sea Serpents have been commonly described in many folklore and myths. From the Kraken to the Leviathain to Jörmungandr to the Loch Ness Monster, sightings of Sea Serpents have been plentiful.

Although classically regarded either as mis-identifications or hoaxes, some scientists believe that legendary sea serpent sightings can be attributed to certain animals.

The Oarfish is similar in appearance to a snake, it has a highly elongated body which can grow up to 17 meters long. Although commonly found in many parts of the world, it is elusive and rarely seen live; usually specimens are caught or collected when washed ashore.



7. Komodo Dragon

By the early 20th century, Western scientists viewed tales of monstrous land crocodiles with skepticism. Specimens were produced in Java, but research into these creatures failed into obscurity as World War I began.

In 1926, an expedition from the American Museum of Natural History confirmed that the tales of giant lizards were true. W. Douglas Burden, the leader of the expedition, returned with twelve preserved specimens and two live ones.

These lizards were once thought by the locals to able to either breathe fire or venom, also that they were the reincarnations of the fellow people.

8. Mountain Gorilla

As mentioned earlier, for centuries, tales of large “ape-men” in East Africa have captivated explorers and natives alike. Numerous tribes have legends of massive, hairy creatures that would kidnap and eat humans, overpowering them with their ferocity and strength. The creatures go by many names, among them ngila, ngagi, and enge-ena.

In the sixteenth century, English explorer Andrew Battel spoke of man-like apes that would visit his campfire at night, and in 1860, explorer Du Chaillu wrote of violent, bloodthirsty forest monsters. Up until the twentieth century, many of these tales were ignored or discounted.

n 1902, German officer Captain Robert von Beringe shot one of these “man-apes” in the Virunga region of Rwanda. Bringing it back to Europe with him, he introduced the world to a new species of ape.

9. Okapi

The Okapi was known to the ancient Egyptians; shortly after its discovery by Europeans, an ancient carved image of the animal was discovered in Egypt. For years, Europeans in Africa had heard of an animal that they came to call the 'African unicorn'.

Despite descriptions from explorers and even skins, Western science rejected the existence of such a creature, viewing it as nothing more than a fantastical chimera of real animals. Expeditions uncovered nothing, and it would seem the “African unicorn” was just as mythical as its namesake.

All that ended in 1901 when dead specimens and eventually live specimens were presented. Today, it is the only living relative of the giraffe, sharing a similar body structure and its characteristic long blue tongue. However, the markings on its back legs resemble that of a zebra’s stripes.

10. Giant Squid

Tales of giant squid have been common among mariners since ancient times, and may have led to the Norse legend of the kraken, a tentacled sea monster as large as an island capable of engulfing and sinking any ship.

The Lusca of the Caribbean and Scylla in Greek mythology may also derive from giant squid sightings. Eyewitness accounts of other sea monsters like the sea serpent are also thought to be mistaken interpretations of giant squid.

A portion of a giant squid was secured by the French gunboat Alecton in 1861 leading to wider recognition of the genus in the scientific community. From 1870 to 1880, many squid were stranded on the shores of Newfoundland. In 2004, a complete specimen was first collected, while in 2006, a live specimen was first filmed.

Since then, the giant squid has passed on from being a legend, into the animal kingdom.

Reported TR-3B (Triangle) Crash Sighting, Witnessed by Family

A Central Valley California Family driving home late Saturday Evening (August 21st, 2010) called the 24 hour hotline of Jeffrey Gonzalez (MUFON State Section Director) to report seeing a “Triangle Shaped Craft” make a hard landing onto the side of a nearby mountain just north of Fresno CA.

While talking to a male witness by phone, the investigator reported over hearing two female witnesses speak in the background describing the lights of the craft. He over heard them saying, “It’s trying to take off, it’s trying to lift!”

He also stated, “When I arrived to the area where the family was, I looked up on the mountain and there were three distinct glowing white lights coming from the area where the family reported seeing the craft; these could be seen on the side of the mountain. What puzzled me was that there are no homes or buildings on the side of that mountain. There is only a small shack used by military utility teams from the nearby base, which is visible during the day.”
